Memorial Day: How to Honor and Promote Your Business

Memorial Day is a time to come together as a nation and remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. As we approach this holiday, it's important to be mindful of how we talk about it on social media. There are ways to commemorate Memorial Day and promote your business simultaneously, but it's crucial to do so in a respectful way.  Plus this day also unofficially marks the start of the Summer season, so it is but a very great opportunity to revamp and offer your products and discounts

In this blog post, we will share some tips on how to create Memorial Day social media posts that will honor the fallen heroes and help you make some sales too!

Don't say "Happy Memorial Day."

This day is about remembrance and honor, not happiness. A respectful message or quote is all that's needed like, "Today we commemorate the lives that were shed for our freedom."

Make it about them, not you.

Your social media posts should be about honoring the fallen heroes and not hardcore promoting your business. If you're going to mention your company at all, make sure it's in a  very respectful way  (e.g., "We will be closed on Memorial Day to honor those who have served"/ "This Memorial Day, we are honoring those who have serve by offering an x amount of discount to our same day deliveries.").

Never Upload your #selfie that is out of context.

Messages of memory for individuals who have died do not need to be lengthy or elaborate. You may express your respects without expressing your political views or sentiments by using apolitical icons such as the American flag, the Statue of Liberty, and the Bald Eagle.

However, never upload your #selfie if there is no context or tie to the day. You also don't want to utilize the #MemorialDay hashtag to try to capitalize on the traffic or amount of individuals the hashtag appears to be drawing.

Don't make a post honoring the incorrect service members and losing sight of what the day is all about.

On Memorial Day, it's natural to want to commemorate veterans and current military members. And, with so many distinct holidays honoring the United States Armed Forces, it's easy to lose track of who to thank for their service. However, Memorial Day was established with the sole goal of commemorating and honoring those service members who made the greatest sacrifice: dying while serving.

So, while you may wish to honor that sacrifice by paying it forward and thanking the servicemembers who are still living or retired, it is not always warmly received.

Events like these should be commemorated with so much honor and respect, especially for those family members left behind. As we try to leverage each event and be in the loop for the trend, we want to make sure that the essence of respect and paying tribute is our utmost priority.
